Chapter 8
When to Ask for Medical Help
Ask for medical help if you notice a sustained or rapid upward trend and want it interpreted in context — especially if treatment exposure, access, or other medicines have changed. A visit can be appropriate before the number feels dramatic.
Ask if glucose or blood-pressure patterns are changing and those measurements are relevant for you. Ask if weakness, loss of function, dizziness, or a drop in strength is new. Ask if eating has become chaotic, secretive, or frightening, or if thoughts about food and weight are taking over the day.
Ask if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Medication and weight-change questions in that setting belong with a clinician, not with a self-designed pause or restart.
Seek urgent or emergency care for rapid gain with swelling or shortness of breath, or for any serious or persistent medication concern that feels unsafe to wait on — severe abdominal pain, allergic symptoms, chest pain, fainting, or thoughts of self-harm. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
These are reasons for evaluation, not labels. A visit can be appropriate even when the list above is incomplete. If you are unsure, that uncertainty is itself a reason to ask. This chapter cannot replace a clinician who can see the rest of your history.
Questions that belong in a visit
- Is this a fluctuation or a sustained upward trend?
- What changed in treatment exposure, access, sleep, stress, or other medicines?
- Which measurements or symptoms should bring me back sooner?

People often wait because they do not want to "bother" a clinician with regain. Regain after a treatment or access change is a medical topic. It is one of the reasons follow-up exists.
If you cannot get a timely visit, use the clinic's ordinary contact path and say that the trend is rising or that a safety symptom is present. Do not wait for a perfect appointment if the concern is urgent.
