Chapter 4

Can You Increase Testosterone Naturally?

This is one of the most common questions men ask.

The answer is:

Sometimes.

It depends on why your testosterone is low.

Losing Excess Weight Can Help

Obesity is strongly linked with lower testosterone.

For some men, losing weight can raise testosterone without TRT.

Research has shown that men with obesity often see increases in both total and free testosterone when they lose meaningful weight.

The more weight they lose, the larger the improvement can be.

That means some men should address weight before assuming they need lifelong testosterone therapy.

Sleep Matters

Poor sleep can affect hormones.

Those symptoms can look a lot like low testosterone.

Treating sleep problems is part of good care.

Exercise Helps Overall Health

Exercise supports:

  • Muscle
  • Body composition
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar
  • Mood
  • Sleep

Resistance training is especially helpful for keeping muscle as you age.

Exercise is good medicine.

But it should not be marketed as a guaranteed cure for true testosterone deficiency.

Review Your Medicines

Some medicines can lower testosterone.

Examples can include long-term opioid pain medicines and certain steroid medicines.

Never stop a medicine on your own.

Instead, review your medication list with your clinician.

Control Health Problems

Obesity, diabetes, serious illness, poor sleep, and other health problems can affect testosterone.

Improving your overall health may improve your hormone levels too.

What About Testosterone-Boosting Supplements?

Be careful.

The supplement market is full of products that promise to “boost testosterone naturally.”

Many do not have strong evidence that they treat true testosterone deficiency.

Some may also contain ingredients you do not need.

Natural Treatment vs. TRT Is the Wrong Question

It does not have to be one or the other.

The right question is:

Why is your testosterone low?

If obesity, sleep, medicines, or another reversible problem is lowering testosterone, address it.

If you have true testosterone deficiency and symptoms continue, TRT may be appropriate.

The best plan may include both medical treatment and better health habits.

Look for reversible causes first

Weight
Losing excess weight can help some men.
Sleep
Poor sleep and sleep apnea can lower testosterone.
Exercise
Exercise supports muscle and overall health.
Medicines
Review medicines with a clinician.
Health
Treat the whole clinical picture.
Supplements
Evidence can be weak and ingredients can vary.

The best plan treats what is actually lowering testosterone.
